Mostly Harmless

Hello 2A and 2B and welcome to the Dorsey land of English 11.  I am sure you are all wondering, as always, what the heck is Ms. Dorsey talking about?  What is this 42 nonsense?! What is 42 the answer to?!  Well, I will tell you.  I don’t know.  I can tell you that all of this craziness comes from one of my favorite book series: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.  In the series, the character’s seek the answer to the ultimate question about life, the universe, and everything, eventually building a super-computer who tells them that the answer is…cue epic music…42.  The problem is, no one knows the question.

Now that I have gone through all of that, I will tell you that none of this is related in any way to what we are doing in class.  I just thought I would share one of my passions with you–in this case, reading witty, sarcastic novels.  However, I am excited to keep working with you during the next nine weeks as we begin our new unit: persuasion!

Come on now, show some enthusiasm.  You get the opportunity to rip apart others’ arguments, figure out why they work, and then perhaps create a flawless argument of your own…

The other major project for the nine weeks–in case you haven’t already noticed–will be developing your blogs.  Scared yet?  If you are, that is perfectly all right, because I am probably as inexperienced as the rest of you, if not more so.  However, I have complete faith that we will work through this together, and once we completely master this whole blog thing–as I am sure we will–we will kick back and gloat over our wonderful feat.

In Hitchhiker’s Guide, the earth creatures are aghast to discover that the only entry about earth in the universe’s most popular interractive encyclopededia merely describes it as “mostly harmless.”  In the same vein, our persuasion unit will be “mostly harmless.”  (Huh…I guess there is a relationship…) This unit will not hurt you, and I know everyone in this class is perfect capable of rising to the challenge.

Make sure you guys check up here regularly.  I will be posting directions for finding assignments on my home page soon.

Oh, and in case you are interested in 42, the ultimate question, mostly harmless, or bath towels, I have included a link to amazon.com where you can purchase your own copy of the Hitchhiker’s series.
